It’s a much loved piece of urban folklore. According to the theory of aerodynamics, the bumble bee is not supposed to be able to fly, because the size, weight and shape of his body in relation to his wing span, makes flying impossible. But you see, here's the problem: somebody forgot to tell the bumble bee about this theory and he goes ahead and flies and makes a little honey every day! A bumblebee’s wings seem awfully small for their large body, particularly when compared to a bird, or even to other insects. From appearances alone, you may wonder how a bumblebee is able to fly at all!

The old myth that "bumblebees shouldn’t be able to fly" was based on calculations using the aerodynamic theory of 1918-19, just 15 years after the Wright brothers made the first powered flight. Bumblebees can get stranded in the rain when they’ve strayed too far from the nest and get cold or run out of energy. If you believe you can, you can. Kinda like “whether you think you can or can’t, you’re right.” In 2008, wannabe president Mike Huckabee said "It's scientifically impossible for the bumblebee to fly; but the bumblebee, being unaware of these scientific facts, flies anyway." So given that bees obviously can fly, travelling at a rate of 3 meters per second, are they wilfully defying all the proven laws of aerodynamics and science as we know them, or is there something else going on? Of course.
